Homes further from the water can sometimes get away with an occasional glance at the sump pit. The bucket test

If it does not start, starts and stops erratically, or runs but the water level in the pit does not drop, you have found a problem before the storm did.
Checking the discharge line
The discharge line carries water away from the house once the pump has done its job, and it is easy to overlook because most of it is outside where you rarely look at it. Make sure the outside end is clear of leaves, mulch, or ice in winter, and that it is actually directing water away from the foundation rather than letting it pool right back where it started.
The check valve matters more than people think
A check valve sits in the discharge line and stops water from flowing back down into the pit once the pump shuts off. Without one working properly, the pump ends up cycling constantly, pumping the same water back and forth, wearing itself out faster and doing less actual work than it should. The float switch
The float switch is what tells the pump when to turn on, and it is also one of the more common points of failure. A float that has gotten stuck against the side of the pit, tangled in its own cord, or coated in sediment will not rise properly, which means the pump will not turn on even though the water in the pit is rising around it. During the bucket test, watch the float itself, not just whether the pump eventually kicks on.
Why a backup pump is worth having
A primary sump pump runs on electricity, and a heavy storm is exactly the kind of event that sometimes takes the power out along with it. A battery backup pump picks up where the primary one leaves off if the power goes down mid-storm, which is often the worst possible time for a pump to go silent. It is a small piece of insurance against the exact scenario a sump pump exists to prevent in the first place.
A quick pre-storm checklist
- Run the bucket test and watch the full cycle, not just whether it starts
- Clear the discharge line outlet of debris
- Confirm the check valve is holding and the pump is not short cycling
- Check the float switch moves freely and is not tangled or coated in sediment
- Confirm a battery backup is in place and charged, if you have one
