What counts as an emergency

Cold snaps are the classic trigger for the first category, a pipe running along an exterior wall or through an unheated crawlspace freezes, expands, and splits somewhere along its length, and the failure doesn't show itself until the thaw sends water everywhere at once.

What to do in the first five minutes
Find the shutoff for the fixture, or for the whole house if you can't isolate it, and close it. That single action does more to limit damage than anything else you can do before help arrives.
If water is reaching anything electrical, an outlet, a light fixture, an appliance, cut power to that area at the breaker before you do anything else. Water and live electrical don't mix, and this step comes before you even think about mopping.
Then call. Closing the water off and killing power to anything wet are the two things worth doing with your own hands before help is on the way. Everything after that, finding the source, deciding what needs replacing, cleaning up, is ours to handle, not something you need to figure out standing in a wet hallway at midnight.
